Exploring Roles in the ECE Community: Local and State Levels

The three local or state organizations or communities of practice that appealed to me are:

1. California Department of Education. http://www.cde.ca.gov/index.asp

2. California Head Start. http://caheadstart.org/\

3. Child Development Training Consortium.

The reason why I chose these organizations is because they are very strong resources for my area that I can use for my Community of Practice. They all represent early childhood education in one form or another, and point to many other beneficial resources.

The current job opportunities that interest me are working for the local community college as an instructor. They also have a child development center on site that is looking for a site supervisor. My passion is to go back to where I got my education and start. I was a single mom when I started my educational journey and I had many people help me along the way. A big part of my journey was spent at the community college. I learned so much from my courses and from the events that they offered with regard to early childhood education. My mentor works there and I feel this is where I would like to pursue my career.

The skills and experience I would need to competently fulfill being an instructor is a Master’s degree in child development, early childhood education. The skills and experience I would need for the site supervisor is a bachelor's degree in child/human development and a site supervisor permit.

Thanks,
Cortnee :)

  1. Hi Cortnee,

I used to live and work in Southern California, and the resources and opportunities are so deep by comparison to where I now live, in New Mexico. I think it is great that you can consider working as an instructor in the college in which you started your teacher education. I think that you would be able to provide excellent testimony to what a single mom with support and tenacity can achieve.

Our local community college also has an early childhood center. It is however of mixed quality according to the adult instructors who teach courses in the same building.

  2. Dear Cortnee,

Your post reminded me of the saying, never forget where you came from. You going back to where it began for you is special. You want to give back to those who gave to you and helped you when you were learning. I was a single mom when I first learned about Head Start. Now I am a Head Start teacher. I wanted to work with Head Start because of what it stands for. It allowed my children to receive skills that I would have taken a long time to teach them because I had to work. Great post and reasons for doing what you do.

    Cortnee,
I think that the reasons you give for wanting to go back to where you began are excellent! Great post and good luck!

  4. Hi,

I am also interested in finding an instructor position at my local community college. I think it would be a rewarding career path.
